About Aikido

about aikido
Is Aikido good for MMA competitions like UFC?

Aikido is about controlling the aggresor without inflicting any damage. I read that in Wikipedia. I want to enroll myself in Aikido after taking Muay Thai lessons. I want to become a fighter someday. I just want to know if Aikido is suitable for combat sports.

Akido is good for self defense, but for fighting in an controlled situation for sport, I think not.
Wrestling
BJJ
Graco Roman Wrestling
are better because of the submission holds that you will learn how to do, and defend against.

Akido is great for an uncontrolled environment with out rules.
Plus it uses a lot of small joint manipulation. Which is against most rules in mma organizations.

This definitive, profusely illustrated manual covers the essential elements of the philosophy and practice of Aikido, the Japanese martial art that has been embraced by modern psychology and many Western bodywork therapies. Useful to the beginner and experienced practitioner alike, the book details the traditional methods and techniques of Shirata Rinjiro, of whom John Stevens is a principal student. Noted for the precise execution of a wide range of techniques and an emphasis on Aikido as a spiritual path, Shirata Sensei’s teachings exemplify the way of the warrior: superior technical prowess combined with profound spiritual insight. In addition to photographs and descriptions of all the important Aikido techniques, Stevens recounts interesting and lively anecdotes about the history of Aikido and its founder, Ueshiba Morihei, who developed it from a martial art into a spiritual discipline. A biography of Shirata Sensei, complete with his reflections on sixty years of Aikido practice, is also included.

From Sun Tzu’s Art of War to Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching, the classics of Eastern thought have been a popular influence on current management and leadership strategy around the world. Now, Robert Pino presents managers and executives with a powerful strategy for thinking about competition–Aikido–a marital art that focuses on working in harmony to resolve conflicts and neutralize opponents. Aikido managers are not solely driven by competition, but focus instead on taking over the power and energy of their opponent–to render the competitor’s stength obsolete. It is also a method for attaining mental and physical balance–in business, for instance, the organization itself can be seen as the physical component, and the company’s strategy and culture as the mental. If these 2 components are balanced, the company can achieve an unbeatable intrinsic strength.

The Hidden Roots of Aikido

The Hidden Roots of Aikido

The Daitoryu is a brutally effective fighting method thought to have been first developed more than a thousand years ago by members of the Japanese imperial family. It was then refined and honed in great secrecy through centuries of hand-to-hand combat by highly trained warriors. Its techniques were jealously guarded until late in the nineteenth century, when it was first introduced to the world by master Sokaku Takeda, who began to accept students from around the country. It was this tradition that Morihei Ueshiba spent years studying just before he set out on his own to found Aikido-which has in recent years become one of the world’s most popular martial arts. The roots of Aikido are in the Daitoryu, and for that reason Aikido practitioners will want to learn all they can about this martial art. The Hidden Roots of Aikido is the first book to appear in English that offers a detailed visual introduction to techniques of the Daitoryu tradition. Heavily illustrated with approximately 800 photographs, it gives a clear, complete picture of the steps involved in about 90 techniques. Its substantial section on history and theory takes a close look at the Daitoryu’s historical background and philosophy, while a glossary of terms provides a handy list of the most important terms. The Hidden Roots of Aikido will be an indispensable learning tool for students of the Daitoryu, and a valuable reference for other martial arts practitioners.

Budo: The Teachings of Monhei Ueshiba, the Founder of Aikido

Budo: The Teachings of Monhei Ueshiba, the Founder of Aikido

$11.52

Morihei Ueshiba is rightly known as one of the world’s greatest martial artists for his creation of aikido, the synthesis of his superb technique and his profound spiritual insight into the nature of the universe. Aikido is much more than just another fighting style, it is a holistic approachto life that Morihei described as a divine path inspired by the gods that leads to truth, goodness, and beauty. Sadly, Morihei left few writings to explain his martial arts philosophy, preferring to teach his disciples by direct example. Aikido students will be familiar with photographs and film footage of Morihei as an old man, effortlessly defeating his much younger opponents, but very little has been published about Morihei’s prewar years, when he was perfecting aiki-budo, as aikido was then known. In 1938 Morihei wrote Budo(Martial Way) as an instruction manual and a statement of the aims and spirit of his martial arts philosophy. Budo, however, was never made available to the general public, and it even contains the injunction that these techniques … should not be disclosed indiscriminately to the public. Now with the worldwide popularity of aikido rivaling that of judo and karate-do, the Aikikai Foundation and the Ueshiba family have decided that it is time for this historic treatise of the martial arts to be translated into English, and made available to general readers and students of aikido allover the world. Reproduced faithfully from the original, this seminal work contains one of the founder’s few personal statements of his basic principles, expressed both in prose and mystical poetry. The text is accompanied by photographs of Morihei illustrating the aikidotechniques he describes. This martial arts classic is preceded by an introductory biographical essay on Morihei by his son Kisshomaru Ueshiba, the present chairman of the Aikikai Foundation. This enlightening work recounts the founder’s early life, his inspirational ‘encounter with the religious mystic Onisaburo Deguchi, and the spiritual revelations that led him to develop the art of aikido. The volume concludes with a series of action photographs of the founder demonstrating aikido techniques, taken at a private dojo in Tokyo in 1936. This section also includes selected photographs of Morihei in action in 1951. The more than 400 historic photographs shown here provide an unequalledopportunity to observe the lifelong devotion to aikido and the continuity of performance that characterized Morihei’s approach to his art.
